The Outhouse in the Forest of Dean is a multi award winning private house with a central gallery illuminated by a dramatic 13m angled roof light. A high performance shading solution was required to control glare while maintaining daylight and the clean, contemporary interior.
Guthrie Douglas were engaged to deliver a bespoke, flexible shading system for the long, angled rooflight.
THE CHALLENGE
The key challenge was to provide glare control across the 13m roof light while maintaining tension and performance, ensuring the blinds operated smoothly without sagging or rippling, and remained visually discreet.
THE SOLUTION
Two motorised SHY FTS screen fabric blinds were installed from either end, allowing precise control of light and shade. The FTS system keeps the fabric taut at any position, and concealed headboxes and side channels ensure the blinds are almost invisible when retracted. Operation is motorised via a wireless radio signal.
CONCLUSION
Early collaboration between Guthrie Douglas, SHY, and the installation team delivered a solution that balances daylight, glare control, and aesthetic integration, perfectly meeting the functional and design requirements of the home.
