Location

Pimlico Road, London

Newson’s Yard, located on London’s iconic Pimlico Road, has been sensitively redeveloped as a design destination that celebrates the site’s rich heritage as a former timber yard.

The transformation, led by Stiff + Trevillion Architects and constructed by Knight Harwood, preserves the industrial character of the original structure while introducing contemporary detailing and state-of-the-art finishes. Expansive roof glazing floods the interiors with natural light, creating a bright and welcoming retail environment – but also introducing the need for intelligent solar control.

THE CHALLENGE

The redevelopment required a shading solution that could provide discreet solar protection without compromising the architectural integrity of the building. The rooflight design included long, uninterrupted spans of glazing, which demanded blinds with a 6-metre draw and a smooth, even appearance when in use.

The challenge was to achieve this scale of coverage without sagging, maintaining a clean visual profile and ensuring reliable performance over time.

THE SOLUTION

Working with Soltech Systems Ltd, Guthrie Douglas supplied TESS™100 tensioned blinds, expertly installed by IJ Install Ltd. The system was enhanced with relieving rollers to eliminate fabric sag over long spans, delivering both aesthetic and functional performance.

The blinds retract discreetly when not in use, preserving the clean lines and bright atmosphere of the space, while providing effective solar control when required. The result is a seamless integration of shading into this beautifully restored interior.

CONCLUSION

This project demonstrates the power of collaborative expertise in delivering tailored shading solutions for complex architectural environments. The Guthrie Douglas system contributes to the comfort, usability, and longevity of the space, supporting the wider vision for Newson’s Yard as a destination for world-class design.
